SLAQ Serving Leader Training Internship

SLAQ (Servant Leader Quest) is a program (a ministry of Coracle) that offers youth from diverse backgrounds a chance to discover the sacredness of life and the gift of a “good” creation through opportunities of real-life adventure, discipleship, and leadership.

Assignment: An opportunity to serve, lead, and mentor youth as in the SLAQ program throughout a yearlong placement learning, in a partnership of SLAQ, the VMMissions tranSend program, and (potentially) a local church.

This is a 1 year placement (End of June through early July), generally ¼ time (there is a ½ time option).

Dara Showalter and Devin Stipe served as Serving Leaders with SLAQ.Serve: SLAQ Serving Leader will experience real-life service through practical support of the SLAQ programs day to day operations. Everything from working on our newsletter, to organizing data, to picking up pizza or helping clean up from an event. Service is at the heart of good leadership, and SLAQ will provide meaningful opportunities to grow in this important area.

Mentor: Studies show time and time again that the role of mentors whose age and cultural awareness bridges the gap between youth and their parents are some of the most important predictors of health and well being for a youth. As a Serving Leader within SLAQ a significant part of your time will be dedicated to real-Life mentoring same gender High School youth who are a part of the SLAQ Discipleship Cohort. This includes everything from studying Crucial Conversations content with them, to connecting over coffee for times of prayer, to sending them a card when it is their birthday.

Lead: In this assignment, you will have opportunities for real-life leadership. The primary expression of that leadership will take the form of running our Adventure Club program for immigrant and refugee middle school youth. From developing trip itineraries, to providing Wilderness First Aid, and team building activities, Serving Leaders will be mentored through a process of envisioning, planning, executing, and reviewing, that will equip them for real-Life leadership.

All of these experiences are guided through bi-weekly mentoring from the SLAQ director as well as regular coaching from VMMissions staff.
